Author Scarlett Thomas gave an inspirational talk to students from the College, and visiting children from St Peter’s School, about her debut children's novel, Dragon's Green. The children heard all about the inspiration behind the book and were given a tantalising insight into the story, before being given a signed copy to read at home.
The story features main character Effie Truelove who truly believes in magic. So does her grandfather Griffin (although he refuses to do any magic, let alone teach Effie how to use it). After a mysterious incident leaves Griffin close to death, Effie is given an unusual silver ring and told she must look after her grandfather’s library of rare and powerful books. But then the books fall into the hands of shady scholar Leonard Levar, and Effie is propelled into the most dangerous adventure of her life.
Effie and her friends—nerdy Maximilian, rugby-mad Wolf, helpful Lexy, and eccentric Raven—must then discover their true powers if they are to get the books back. And Effie alone will have to travel to the Otherworld, where she will uncover the true meaning of the strange old book called Dragon’s Green…
After the hugely successful event author Scarlett Thomas said:
"One of the nicest things about coming to Ardingly College is that there were children in the audience who were already reading the book so they were really excited to meet me and hear what I had to say. One child was already two thirds of the way through it.
This is my favourite book I have written so far (she has published 9 adult books and 1 non-fiction).
Children at Ardingly College are clearly great readers and meeting children, like the ones I have met today, who are so enthusiastic, is a great joy.”
