Painting, printing, textiles, ICT, drawing and ceramics are part of the art curriculum. Everyone is encouraged to express their creative side.
Our talented artists have the opportunity to attend masterclasses and some embark on art foundation degrees at renowned national and international colleges..
The bright, spacious Art School houses a large gallery, four Studios including a textiles room, sculpture studio and Sixth Form teaching room, an extensive art library and IT facilities and a kiln room.
We encourage all students to discover their personal strengths and offer the following techniques through our individually focused teaching:
- Painting - acrylic, oil, watercolour, mixed media
- Printing - lino, silk screen, mono print, etching, calligraphy
- Textiles - machine and hand stitch, repeat print, fashion, construction
- Sculpture - figurative, abstract, ceramics, casting, slab, coil, pots, tiles
- Drawing - life class, charcoal, graphite, ink, line, mixed media
- ICT - photographic manipulation, stop frame animation, stills
We take students on invaluable trips to cities such as Barcelona, Venice and New York to enhance their understanding. We also organise annual visits to London for all examination students, where galleries such as the Tate, Courtauld, V&A and Saatchi advance everyone’s understanding of a huge range of techniques and ideas. We aim to get the best from our art students by encouraging and supporting them in their very important quest toward becoming decisive, independent and skilled creative artists.
Regular Life Drawing Sessions are run for the Sixth Form and technical skills are demonstrated and individuality encouraged in all our students’ bodies of work.
We have successfully advised and prepared many Sixth Form art students for art foundation and degree interviews and portfolio reviews, gaining places in colleges such as Central Saint Martin’s, Brighton, London College of Fashion, Falmouth, Bournemouth and Epsom.
We have also had winners in international art competitions such as the Royal Academy of Arts online Student Art Competition and New York School of Art Film Competition.
We run student exhibitions every year for parents, staff and outside visitors to view.
Art scholarships are available at Ardingly College.
