Pupils from Ardingly College Prep School have been involved in judging an innovative new bookprize for children’s authors.
Launched by Cranleigh Schools this year, the prize is unique in that it is designed to honour the best new authors for young readers aged seven to 10.
Denise Reed, Ardingly College Prep School’s Assistant Librarian, said: “At Ardingly we are always on the lookout for new and exciting ventures that will develop in our pupils a love of books and reading and so we were quick to register our interest in The Awesome Book Award. As a result, our Yr 5/6 Book Group joined pupils from more than 40 schools from across London and the south east of England in reading, discussing and reviewing five short-listed books, before casting their votes for their favourite.”
The final Awesome Book Award ceremony, which was hosted by the world-renowned children's author, Lauren Child, MBE, took place on the evening of Thursday May 4th, at Cranleigh Prep School. Hundreds of excited young readers attended, together with all the short-listed authors. Ross Welford was announced the winner for his book, Time Travelling with a Hamster.
Prizes were also awarded for the most inspiring and entertaining book reviews. Everyone at Ardingly College Prep School was thrilled when pupil Annabelle Bower-Nye was presented with a £30 book voucher for her review of The Imagination Box, by Martyn Ford. “Cranleigh's Patron of Reading Cliff McNish was on hand to present the prizes. It was a wonderful evening and we cannot wait to do it all again next year, ” said Ms Reed. To read Annabelle's review click here.
