Our Lower School pupils took part in a presentation and workshop run by their chosen charity, David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation recently.
An overview of the key species DSWF protect, the projects they run, some background on how and why they started led into some examples of how effective great ‘tags’ or ‘straplines’ can be in the fight for environmental and wildlife conservation.
The presentation of the individual House animal adoption packs was followed by the activity workshop, allowing the pupils to design some ‘straplines’ and show off their imagination and creativity by drawing them onto canvas shopping bags and pouches. Some quotes from pupils after the event highlighted their engagement and their growing awareness of the need for conservation:
“I cannot believe that a kilo of poached rhino horn is worth more than a kilo of gold..that’s shocking..”
“Those anti poaching rangers are so brave – they go into the wilderness to protect the animals from poachers and risk being shot!”
“So upsetting to know that a magnificent rhino is killed just because someone thinks their horn that is like our toenails and hair will cure them of an illness”
“Why are humans so horrible to such beautiful animals? It makes no sense to me…”
“I loved that David Shepherd does this work, can I go out to one of the projects?”
“”wow, we can double our donation! The Big Give that Tom said sounds a brilliant idea!”
